What makes Out Of The Sky Photography Different?

Out Of The Sky Photography was started in an effort to combine our love of flying, love of photography, and our deep interest in advanced information technology (image processing). If there is a better reason “to go to work every day” than to honestly love what you do, we don’t know what that reason may be!
During our initial discussions, all three of us agreed that we would attempt to form the business by “thinking outside of the box”. We heard all the lectures about what “should” and “should not” be done in a business. As partners, we unanimously agreed that we would consciously ignore much of conventional thinking and “do it our way” and succeed or fail “our way”.
Conventional wisdom believes that photographers should retain ownership of the actual image (film negative or digital image), and sell prints on request. We adopted the logic that “if YOU are paying us to photograph something, then YOU own the image”. While we would be very happy to print any of the images you own (we know that we are very good at processing digital images), we’d really rather be flying and taking photographs than working in the office! So … YOU own the digital images! Feel free to have them printed anywhere you wish, or to modify them to fit your requirements and personal preferences!
This same unconventional thinking led us to our initial pricing structure:
- We collectively decided that we would rather sell 1,000 customers our service at $200.00 each, than to sell 200 customers a service at $1,000 each! Ultimately (we hope) this policy will involve more labor, but as we said before: “we love what we do”!
- Pricing the actual photography and image processing separate from the costs of the airplane, pilot, fuel, etc., we are able to offer significant savings to any customers requesting photo sessions of multiple sites during the same flight. For example: Photographing five (5) sites (five “photo sessions”) will result in a charge of $250.00 ($50.00 per session cost) for the actual photography. If these sessions were in the local Huntsville area, and were undertaken as separate flights, the cost of the airplane, pilot, and fuel would most likely be $650.00 ($130 minimum per flight), resulting in a total cost of $900.00. However, if we could photograph all the sites during a single flight of say two hours duration (example only), the total cost could be as low as $510.00 ($250 for the photography, and $260.00 for the airplane, pilot, fuel, etc.).
Another Out Of The Sky Photography business goal is to cultivate long term business relationships. Ultimately our success will depend on having a customer base so satisfied with our service (quality, prices, dependability, etc.) that they will utilize our services whenever the need arises.
